Position Overview & Responsibilities:
This role leads and works with a team to safely and efficiently oversee the welfare, care and day-to-day management of the animals in their sites. The position ensures good production through the implementation of standard operating procedures, maintenance of accurate records and promotion of the well-being of animals.
Major Areas of Accountability:
Assist the Finishing Supervisor in the training of the production team.
Ensure daily care promotes humane animal handling, including the safeguard of animal health, providing access to water and feed, and the best possible environment.
Ensure daily/weekly/monthly paperwork is completed
Closely monitor pigs weaned less than two weeks to ensure pigs are being started according to established protocols
Communicate all animal well-being issues and/or concerns to the Finishing Supervisor
Ensure vaccine and medications are administered according to established protocols
Assist in marking market hogs for shipment to market.
Count and grade incoming isoweans and feeder pigs in a timely manner after arrival.
Be flexible, capable and willing to be “hands on” to perform any production-related task as the circumstances require
Closely communicates with the Finishing Supervisor.
Participates in the group close out review and discussion.
Assist production supervisor in interviewing and selecting independent contractors and employees
Work with independent contractors and staff in a professional manner.
Minimum of 1-3 years of previous swine production experience
Previous experience in a leadership role preferred
A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel between work sites is required
Self-driven with excellent problem-solving ability
Strong communication skills (oral and written)
Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple priorities and complex tasks simultaneously
Ability to hire, train and supervise IC’s and employees
Ability to lift 50 lbs
